Email Hosting

Secure, high-performance, and high-availability email hosting.

News! As of 1 February 2024, Gmail and Yahoo are strengthening their controls on incoming messages: above a specific volume of messages sent in 24 hours, emails must include a valid DKIM signature to be accepted. Consequently, Restena has activated the DKIM signature for all domain names managed on its SMTP servers.
To enable Gmail/Yahoo to check the DKIM signature, the DNS zone for these domains must contain a TXT record relating to the DKIM private key.
* For the zones it manages, Restena will integrate the necessary records during February 2024.
* For other domains, the DNS manager will need to take action.
Tip! To be informed of any DKIM-related rejections, e-mail managers are invited to set up a DMARC record.

Challenges

Email is an essential communication tool and the most commonly used communication method in inter- and intra-company/institutional communications. But a functional email system requires a computer connected to the network, an email account, and messaging software (such as Thunderbird, Outlook, Apple Mail, or Webmail giving access to messages via a browser) in addition to a messaging server.

This messaging server provides disk space for personal email accounts and ensures the sending and receipt of messages. It allows for storing and downloading data (emails) that users receive from and send to contacts, and it communicates with the messaging server hosting the remote mailbox with which a user wants to share emails. Additionally, depending on its settings, it can screen all incoming and outgoing messages to identify any spam mail or embedded viruses.

For institutions that want to give its employees a professional and personal email address, or even a common email address for a group, a high-quality email hosting solution is an essential choice.

A professional email account

The Restena Foundation offers institutions a professional email service (with anti-virus, anti-spam protection, etc.) compatible with all email messaging software available on the market (Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook, Android/iPhone/iPad Mail, etc.) Email inboxes and the management of associated email addresses are available for members of public and private educational establishments within the primary, secondary, and post-secondary sectors, as well as research, teaching, and cultural organisations, on the servers managed and hosted by the Restena Foundation.

Thanks to these services, institutions can offer their employees a professional email account with an institutional email address that may be consulted from any computer linked to the network, benefitting from anti-virus and anti-spam protection as well as a secured SSL/TLS communication. This secure, high-performance, and high-availability email hosting service comes with customer support and assistance.

Online and centralized management of email accounts

Each institution remains in charge of setting up, modifying, deleting, and redirecting its own email addresses thanks to an online email account/address management service (MailGUI). This web interface, a simple, comprehensive, and user-friendly tool effectively allows IT or administrative departments to manage their centralised email accounts online, and, in particular:

  • list all email accounts in the domain mail directory,
  • add accounts/addresses,
  • modify an email account's data,
  • create secondary addresses (aliases) and redirect (forward) email,
  • delete an account,
  • reset passwords,
  • manage distribution lists,
  • set up out-of-office auto-replies.

For (very) small organisations, the Restena Foundation can also take care of managing email addresses and accounts.

  • How can I get rid of *****SPAM***** messages?

    1. Go to the RESTENA User Portal, which contains all of the tools for managing your online account.
    2. Once you’re logged into your profile, select the ‘Change e-mail protection’ section
    3. In this section you can choose to activate (or deactivate) the function that suits you best
    • Redirect to Inbox (default)
    • Automatic moving to a ‘Junk/Spam’ folder (recommended)
    • Direct deletion before downloading

Warning: The automatic direct deletion of messages marked as *****SPAM***** before downloading them to the electronic mailbox involves a certain risk of incorrectly identified mail loss.

  • How can I change my password?

    1. Go to the RESTENA User Portal, which contains all of the tools for managing your online account.
    2. Once you’re logged into your profile, select the ‘Change password’ section
    3. Enter your new password in the ‘New password’ field
    4. To confirm your new password, enter it again in the ‘Confirm new password’ field

  • Why can’t I send any e-mails?

There are multiple scenarios that can block the sending of your e-mails:

    • Incorrect configuration of mail software: Check the name of the outgoing SMTP mail server. This must be encoded as follows: smtp.restena.lu. To help you set up your mail software, view our user manual 'Configure your email access'..
    • SMTP authentication not set (‘inactive’): If the Restena Foundation is not your ISP, SMTP authentication for your e-mail client is required. To make this change, view our user manual 'Configure your email access'.
    • Default port for sending SMTP e-mail is blocked: If the Restena Foundation is not your ISP, you may have trouble sending mail from our SMTP server ‘smtp.restena.lu’. In this case, open the settings of your mail software and change the SMTP port used for sending by replacing 25 (default) with 587. To make this change, view our user manual 'Configure your email access'..
    • Communication blocked by local firewall and other installed security software: Configure your firewall to allow the SMTP gateway to our SMTP server “smtp.restena.lu”. For more information, refer to the documentation of your firewall.

Tip: You can check your Internet Service Provider with the custom network diagnostics on our Helpdesk page.

  • Why can't I receive (or have stopped receiving) messages in my mailbox?

There are multiple scenarios that can block the receipt of your e-mails:

    • No network connection: Check that the connection to the internet / network is established correctly.
    • Incorrect configuration of mail software: Make sure you have set up your incoming mail server (mail.restena.lu) and your username, then check that the proprietary Microsoft option ”Login with secure password authentication (SPA)” is not selected.
    • Problem with antivirus software and/or firewall: Check that your antivirus / firewall software is working correctly. Refer to the documentation of your antivirus / firewall software
  • Why is the default port for sending e-mail from my electronic messaging blocked?

In an effort to limit the volume of SPAM originating from their network, some Internet Service Providers impose a restriction on their clients by blocking the default SMTP port (25) from sending messages to an SMTP server other than those which are part of their own network.

If the Restena Foundation is not your ISP, you may have trouble sending mail from our SMTP server ‘smtp.restena.lu’. In this case, open the settings of your mail software and change the SMTP port used for sending by replacing 25 (default) with 587. To make this change, view our user manual 'Configure your email access'.

Note: Users connected to the internet via the Restena Foundation’s ‘DSL/Fibre Access’ service and users of the Webmail service are not affected by this restriction.
