Thanks to the Restena’s ‘Virtual Server’ service, research and education institutions in Luxembourg can host their application in a secure environment. Since mid-May 2026, and in order to ensure a high level of service, the hosting system has been evolving towards a new European provider, which also enhances the service’s European sovereignty and security.
With the new Proxmox system, the single organisational account is being phased out in favour of personal accounts. Whereas previously they had only a single login shared amongst all their administrators, institutions can now have as many personal accounts as they need to manage their applications. Designed and configured with customised views, these new accounts allow for tailored visibility of the hosting system’s content, in line with each administrator’s responsibilities.
But that is not the only change, personal accounts can now be integrated with the unique authentication and access authorisation service ‘eduID Luxembourg’ – that allows with a single password to authenticate for thousands of services available worldwide. For institutions participating in eduID Luxembourg, the authentication of their administrators is handled by the eduID infrastructure. While recommended, the use of this authentication method is not required to create personal accounts. In Luxembourg, ‘eduID Luxembourg’ provides easy access not only to the ‘virtual server’ service but also to the ‘TCS certificate service’, as well as to ‘FileSender’ and the ‘URL shortener’ offered by Restena.
A new system and data to migrate
To fully benefit from the new management system, all the data stored in the old system must be converted to it. However, this process cannot take place without the tacit consent of the beneficiary institutions. A first log in to the new system by the current virtual server administrators, in accordance with the new authentication procedures, is required before the old one is disabled during summer 2026.
