E-mails can be consulted directly by IMAP protocol and via the WebMail interface.

Anti-virus/anti-spam protection

Each e-mail detected as spam contains in its header information indicating that it is a *****SPAM***** message or, where applicable, a message containing a *****VIRUS*****. Infected attachments are automatically deleted.

By default, all messages marked in this way are delivered to the user mailbox and can, after downloading, be dealt with locally according to preference with tools integrated in the most up-to-date messaging software.

If the user opts for direct deletion of marked messages, the messaging system then blocks spam and the infected messages which have been detected before downloading into the mailbox. This means that the user does not receive the messages which have been detected. No local filtering measure is required.

However, errors in analysis may occur. Certain messages can be incorrectly marked as *****SPAM*****. These are called false positives. The direct deletion of these messages therefore involves a certain risk of losing mail. This is why the choice of how to deal with messages must be considered to be the full responsibility of the user.

Making e-mail secure

IMAPS and Webmail (HTTPS) provide an encrypted connection between the client and the mail server.

Webmail allows the e-mail service to be used via a standard navigator from any computer connected to the Internet. The user has a secure, user-friendly interface which allows him to read and send e-mail messages directly over the web. No prior configuration is required. Simply go to the following address https://webmail.restena.lu/ and enter the login and password.

The anti-spam system subjects messages received to a certain number of tests. The message is considered to be spam if the total of points allocated in accordance with certain criteria exceeds a given threshold. The wording *****SPAM***** is inserted in the subject. This allows this type of message to be recognised and possibly for it to be classified or deleted automatically.

The anti-spam system acts as a filter whose net size can be controlled. As a general rule, a tight filter stops more spam but it can mark mail incorrectly (false positives). On the other hand, a wide filter reduces the number of false positives but detects less spam.

The anti-virus system automatically analyses the documents attached to incoming e-mails and thus protects electronic messaging against all known viruses. Infected attachments are automatically deleted. Infected messages are marked *****VIRUS***** in the subject line.
