Cybersecurity takes center stage

Within the Luxembourg Cybersecurity Week, the RESTENA Foundation, together with the University of Luxembourg, have raised awareness to both Luxembourg research and education community and students on issues related to cybersecurity.

80 professionals and students attended the second edition of CyberDay.lu on Thursday, 17 October 2019, in Esch-Belval, Luxembourg. Collaboratively organized by the RESTENA Foundation and the University of Luxembourg, CyberDay.lu was proposed as part of the Cybersecurity Week Luxembourg coordinated by SECURITYMADEIN.LU, and the European awareness campaign initiated within the European Cyber Security Month (ECSM).

Digital Threats and Cybersecurity

In Luxembourg, CyberDay.lu was one of the 40 events organized on the national territory between 15 and 25 October 2019, an evidence, if ever needed, reflecting the importance of this topic. Throughout this event dedicated to people operating in the research or education sector in Luxembourg, the emphasis has been on aising awareness on current digital threats and cybersecurity aspects. Several topics of interest were highlighted:

  • the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which, since its entry into force more than a year ago, allows citizens to have additional control over their personal data while strengthening the role of data protection authorities
  • the recent hijacking attacks on the Domain Name System (DNS), where the RESTENA Foundation manages the .lu national extension
  • the activities led by Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CERT / CSIRT) as well as forensic analysis - that is, analysis of information systems once a computer attack has been committed - and ways to deal with security incidents
  • the issues of disinformation and search engine optimization as well as practical advices to protect against risks related to cybersecurity

BEE SECUREGOVCERT.LU et SECURITYMADEIN.LU have joined the University of Luxembourg and the RESTENA Foundation to provide their expertise in this area.

A major challenge

Cybersecurity is a major issue. A mapping of the national cybersecurity ecosystem was presented on 14 October 2019. This mapping was jointly developed by Luxinnovation, the national agency for the promotion of innovation, and the SECURITYMADEIN.LU platform.

As an institution providing, among other things, security services for research and education, including a dedicated Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT), the RESTENA Foundation has found its natural place.
