RESTENA eduroam access - Setup Instructions (Windows XP)

  1. Download the needed CA certificate from here (in Windows format). Double click on it and select "Install certificate...", "Next >", "Next >", "Finish", "Yes", "OK" to install the certificate. For details, please click on the screenshot series below.
  2. Open the "Network connections" window.
  3. Right-click your wireless interface and Select "Properties". You will see the following window:
  4. On this dialog, make sure that the item "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" is set. Afterwards, click on "Wireless Networks" to continue with the settings. The following window will appear:
  5. Verify that the first entry is set ("Use Windows...") and click on the "Add" button to configure eduroam. This will open a new window:
  6. Enter the name "eduroam" in the input field "Network name (SSID)" and select an encryption scheme. We suggest to use WPA2 and AES, but this setting depends on the capabilities of the institution you visit and on your version of Windows XP (it may not have the WPA2 patch, in this case we encourage you to visit this page). Note that the "PSK" variants are not compatible with eduroam. Then, click on the "Authentication" tab to configure your login credentials. he following window will appear:
  7. Select "Protected EAP (PEAP)". Make sure that the two options in the lower part of the window are NOT set, then click on "Properties". The following window will pop up:
  8. Here, select the following:
    - set the option "Validate server certificate"
    - in the field "Connect to these servers", enter "eduroam.restena.lu"
    - select ONLY the "RESTENA eduroam authority" in the list of Trusted Root Certification Authorities
    - set the option "Do not prompt user..."
    - select "Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)"
    - do NOT set "Enable Fast Reconnect"
  9. After you are done, click on the "Configure..." button and yet another small window will pop up:
  10. The option in this window must NOT be set. Now, close all open windows by clicking on "OK". This marks the end of the eduroam configuration. You are now ready to connect to eduroam for the first time:
  11. When you come into the vicinity of an eduroam network, and a yellow bubble in the task area will show up that informs you that Windows is ready for asking your username and password. This looks like below:

    Click on the bubble, and the window below will appear:
  12. As username, enter your RESTENA mail address. The password is your RESTENA password. The part "Logon domain" MUST be empty. After clicking "OK", you will be connected to eduroam:

    Windows will save your username and password, so you will not be prompted for it every time you connect.

Note: concealing your identity (email address) from the hotspot is not possible with the Windows XP built-in connectivity tool. Your e-mail address will be known to the hotspot operator when you connect.
